The Glatt Water Castle: Four Museums in One Castle
Embedded in the idyllic landscape of the eastern Black Forest lies Glatt moated castle - an architectural jewel and at the same time a living place of history and culture. With its impressive Renaissance architecture from the 16th century and four fascinating museums under one roof, the castle attracts visitors from near and far. Let's explore what makes this historical gem so special.
A Journey Through Architecture and History
Glatt moated castle, located in the small town of Glatt - a district of Sulz am Neckar - has an eventful history. Originally it was a late medieval moated castle, which was remodeled between 1533 and 1547 by Reinhard von Neuneck into one of the earliest Renaissance castles in Germany. With its four wings and the typical moats, the castle is one of the few completely preserved structures of its kind.
After years of changing ownership, the castle was first acquired by the municipality of Glatt, before it finally became the property of the city of Sulz am Neckar in 1975. An extensive renovation, which lasted from 1973 to 1989, saved the castle from decay. Between 1998 and 2001 it was finally expanded for its current use as a cultural and museum center.
Four Museums – One Castle
A highlight of the Glatt moated castle is the cultural diversity that lies behind its historic walls. Here, visitors will find four thematically different museums that together provide a comprehensive picture of regional history, art and culture.
1. The Nobility Museum
In the east wing of the castle, the Nobility Museum invites visitors to immerse themselves in the lives of the nobility in the Middle Ages and early modern times. The magnificent exhibition features an impressive armoury with numerous historical weapons from the Bidermann Foundation.
2. The Castle Museum
Also located in the east wing is the castle museum, which explores the local history of the village of Glatt and its ruling class. It highlights the special relationship between the noble rulers and their subjects and offers exciting insights into everyday life in earlier centuries.
3. The Farmers' Museum
The nearby Zehntscheuer building houses the Farmers' Museum, which opened in 1996. Here, farming traditions and village handicrafts from the surrounding districts of Rottweil and Freudenstadt are vividly presented. Visitors can immerse themselves in the simple but multifaceted life of the rural population.
4. The Galerie Schloss Glatt
The Glatt Castle Gallery, also known as the District Art Museum, represents another side of culture: art. It shows works from the Bernstein School and the Karlsruhe New Figuration, bringing both classical and contemporary art into the venerable castle rooms. This gallery is run in collaboration with the Rottweil district and the Upper Swabian Electricity Works.
A cultural center for the region
Glatt moated castle is not only a historical site, but also a lively cultural centre. Events, exhibitions and a varied cultural programme attract thousands of visitors from the region and beyond every year. The castle is jointly run by the town of Sulz am Neckar and the district of Rottweil, who jointly ensure the maintenance and management of the castle.
